Our Story

The history of the lumber business in Wall Lake began in 1877 with two yards in town. It was until 1930 when Clarence Brotherton purchased both of those yards in Wall Lake and became what is today Wall Lake Lumber Company. Clarence Brotherton at that time had worked and managed many lumber yards in Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota and came to own lumber yards in Remsen, Cherokee and Sac City, Iowa. The lumber business ran deep in Brotherton's family roots as his great grandfather owned a ship-building business. Through the years the Wall Lake Lumber Company was involved not only in lumber, but in fuel, coal and cement. Over the years the business has been passed down through the family sons to sons only to keep expanding and growing in our small town. It was in 1974 with the help of the owner Charles Brotherton, Wall Lake Lumber Company opened it's second location in Lake View, Iowa where Charles son Chris Brotherton would come to manage. Then after in 1980 with the help of his son Bill Brotherton, our Wall Lake Lumber manager, they were able to opened a third location in Odebolt, Iowa which then lead into a fourth location in 1987 located in Carroll, Iowa. As of today there are 5 generations of Brotherton's involved in running the family business.
